Powell appeared in all 33 games for North Carolina in 2025-26, averaging 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game while shooting 36.5 percent (38-of-104) from three-point range, the third-highest mark on the team. He made at least one three-pointer in 24 games and connected on multiple threes 10 times; the Tar Heels went 10-0 in those contests. Powell finished fourth on UNC with 38 made three-pointers — 38 of his 53 made field goals came from beyond the arc — and scored in double figures three times, including a season-high 15 points on a career-best four three-pointers against Virginia Tech. He also displayed strong ball security down the stretch, committing just four turnovers across 251 minutes over the Tar Heels' final 16 games.
Prior to his time at UNC, Powell began his collegiate career at West Virginia in 2024-25, where he started the final 23 games as a freshman and averaged 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game. He finished second on the Mountaineers with 64 three-pointers made while shooting 35.2 percent from beyond the arc and ranked among the top freshmen in the Big 12 in threes. Powell also posted the lowest turnover percentage in the Big 12, committing just 18 turnovers in 963 minutes, and twice tallied a career-high 17 points during the season.
At Centerville High School, Powell played for head coach Brook Cupps and was named the Ohio Coaches Association's Division I Player of the Year as a senior after averaging 19.7 points per game. He scored 17 points in the state championship game against Cleveland St. Ignatius, earned first-team All-Ohio honors as a junior with averages of 16.7 points per game and shot 41 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from three-point range over his final two prep seasons. He played AAU basketball with Wildcat Select Midwest.
