PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers (30-22, 11-18 ACC) fell to Notre Dame (29-21, 12-17 ACC), 6-4, in extra innings on Friday afternoon.
The back-and-forth game needed ten innings before it went final.
Joey Baran went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBI. Both of Baran's RBI were game-tying hits. Making his second start of the season, senior Anthony LaSala hit his second home run of the year on Friday. Jackson Cooke delivered once again in a pinch-hitting role for the Panthers, lining a single up the middle in the ninth inning.
In relief, Daniel McAuliff surrendered just one hit over his 2.2 scoreless innings. Drew Lafferty gave Pitt another quality start, striking out four batters over 5.1 innings.
Despite giving up a run to the Fighting Irish in the top of the second inning, Drew Lafferty was able to minimize the damage and left the bases loaded.
The Panthers responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Kai Wagner led off with a walk and moved up to second on a stolen base. Joey Baran then laced an RBI double into the left-center gap to knot the game at one.
Lafferty continued to deal on the mound, holding Notre Dame to just one run through five innings.
Pitt took their first lead of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. On his senior day, shortstop Anthony LaSala blasted a solo home run to left to give the Panthers the lead. AJ Nessler followed that with a triple in the next at-bat and would be driven in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lorenzo Carrier. Pitt led 3-1 after five.
Notre Dame came right back to regain their lead with a three-run double in the top of the sixth inning.
Joey Baran came up clutch again for the Panthers, tying the game at four with a solo home run in the bottom half of the sixth.
Daniel McAuliff stayed on in relief and worked scoreless seventh and eighth innings to keep the game tied at four.
The Panthers had the winning run on third base in the bottom of the ninth inning but were unable to capitalize. Joey Baran worked a one-out walk and moved all the way up to third on Jackson Cooke's pinch-hit single up the middle. Two groundouts in consecutive at-bats sent the game to extra innings.
The Fighting Irish took the lead on a two-run home run in the top of the tenth inning as they went on even the series with a 6-4 win on Friday.
Pitt's regular season concludes with tomorrow's rubber match at 1 PM.
