CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 11-seeded Pitt battled until the final inning but fell to No. 6-seed Virginia, 2-1, on a walk-off play in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday night at the 2026 ACC Softball Championship.
Pitt's defense set the tone early as Gracie Helton made a diving catch on a popup in front of home plate to record the first out as Kyra Pittman retired two of the first three batters she faced in the opening inning. The Panthers continued to flash the leather in the second frame when Camryn Murphy and Tieley Vaughn teamed up for an inning-ending out at second base.
The Panthers struck first in the top of the second inning as Calle Henne came around to score from second base on a single to right field by Ahmari Braden. Henne was initially ruled out at the plate, but the call was overturned after review to give Pitt a 1-0 advantage.
Pittman was locked in through the opening four innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while facing only 14 batters during the stretch.
Virginia evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run to center field from Macee Eaton to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the final frame.
The Cavaliers pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the walk-off victory.
Despite being charged with the loss, Pittman turned in a strong performance in the circle, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk.
Pitt concludes the 2026 season with a 26-27 overall record and an 8-16 mark in ACC play.
