Panthers Drop ACC Opener to SMU

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men's soccer team fell in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener, dropping a 3-1 decision to No. 7 SMU on Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
SMU opened the scoring in the 29th minute and led 1-0 at halftime. Pitt had chances in the first half, with Caden Grabfelder drawing saves in the 7th and 33rd minutes.
SMU pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute and 3-0 in the 77th. Pablo Portero and Miguel Bertran each tested the SMU goalkeeper in the second half before Carter Kopay cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 89th minute, assisted by Logan Oliver, for his first goal as a Panther.
Jack Moxom made one save in net for Pitt, which was outshot 14-8 despite matching SMU with four shots on goal apiece.
The loss drops Pitt to 3-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in ACC play.
Up Next
Pitt returns home to host Cornell on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
