PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's soccer team dropped its second ACC match Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, falling to Virginia Tech, 2-1.
Pitt (6-3-1, 0-2-0 ACC) controlled the first half, outshooting Virginia Tech (5-1-3, 1-0-0 ACC) 7-3, but the Hokies keeper made four saves to keep the match scoreless at the break.
The Panthers broke through in the 56th minute when Katie Ellermeyer found Sofia Doheny in behind the Virginia Tech back line for her third goal of the season. Doheny got on the end of the pass one-on-one with the keeper and finished to put Pitt ahead 1-0.
Virginia Tech responded two minutes later, capitalizing on a corner kick as the Hokies got on the end of a delivery in the box and headed home to level the match at 1-1 in the 58th minute.
The Hokies took the lead for good in the 76th minute when a VT attacker worked around a defender and sent a long shot to the left corner to make it 2-1.
Pitt finished with 14 shots and seven on target but could not find an equalizer in the final minutes. Elli Johnson made two saves on the night.
