PITTSBURGH – Pitt held off Penn 1-0 on Monday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, riding a second-half goal from Mamadou Tall to improve to 3-1-1 on the season.
Neither team found the net in a scoreless first half, though Pitt controlled the tempo throughout, outshooting Penn 5-2 before the break. Cannon Scretchen aided the offensive push in the opening 45 minutes, forcing a save in the seventh minute, while Anders Bordoy also tested the Penn goalkeeper early in the match.
The Panthers kept pushing after halftime and broke through in the 79th minute, when Tall converted off a feed from Caden Grabfelder and Miguel Bertran for his second goal of the season. A pass to the top of the box from Miguel Bertran found Grabfelder, who put it up to the left post for Tall's header into the back of the net. Tall's finish capped a stretch of second-half pressure that also saw shots from Bruno Bertran, Grabfelder and Scretchen.
Penn had a goal waved off in the final six minutes of play, preserving Pitt's 1-0 lead down the stretch.
Pitt finished the match with an 11-7 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Scretchen paced the Panthers with two shots on the night, both on target, while Albert Thorsen also registered a pair of attempts. Jack Moxom made two saves to secure his second clean sheet of the season.
