Dr. Ted Flogaites joins the Pitt women’s soccer program with 15 years of head coaching experience at the collegiate level. Flogates comes to Pitt after serving as the head coach at Western Illinois, a program he led for four seasons. He has a career coaching record of 151-127-16. In his most recent stop with the Leatherbacks, he compiled a 28-42-3 record and a 13-17-1 record in the Summit League.
“I am so excited to add Ted to our staff. He brings a wealth of experience as a head coach at all college levels, and his knowledge of the game is exceptional,” said head coach Greg Miller. “Having another member of the staff who has been a head coach is a great resource for our players. He has a great balance of humor, passion and command within his personality that I feel our players will be drawn to immediately. He will be primarily in charge of our recruiting and has a well- trained eye for talent and look forward to how he can help deepen our talent pool.”
His finest season in Macomb, Ill., came his first year with the program. The Leatherbacks posted a 13-6 record, including 5-3 in conference play to earn an invitation to the Summit League tournament. They eventually fell as the No. 4 seed to No. 1 Oakland, 1-0. That team broke school single season records in shots per game (9.47) and goals against average (0.63). The squad also tied records in shutouts (9) and goals (38).
Prior to his stop in Western Illinois, Flogaites enjoyed a five-year stay at Hastings College in Nebraska, posting a winning record in each year. He has had a large degree of success at the NAIA level. At Hastings, Flogates and the Broncos won four titles (two regular season GPAC titles/two GPAC Tournament titles) and were ranked No. 9 nationally in the NAIA at the end of the 2011 season.
Under his tutelage, Hastings recorded 52 shutouts in his five years with the program. The Broncos went undefeated at home four of the five years and held a 26-0-1 record in conference play in 2010 and 2011. Dr. Flogates was named the GPAC Coach of the Year twice, as well as the NSCAA/Mondo and Brine NAIA ‘National Coach of the Year’ in 2010.
In 2006 he led the College of Southwest to a 17-3 record, winning the Red River Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to NAIA nationals. He garnered selection as conference and regional ‘Coach of the Year’ honors from RRAC and NSCAA/Adidas, respectively.
Dr. Flogaites also spent three seasons with Lambuth University (2003-05) and two years with New Jersey City University (2001-02).
Beyond the Bio

Ambrose Urbanic Field – let’s get real, that’s where the magic happens!
Favorite sports moment at Pitt?
The first time I set foot on the training pitch with the squad, it had a sort of electricity.
What is your favorite thing to do in the city of Pittsburgh?
Watch my daughter point at the buildings downtown! Or chase her around the fountain at the U.S. Steel Tower building.
What do you love most about the University of Pittsburgh?
The University has everything; powerhouse academics, cool city vibe, but mostly it has great people dedicated to being their best every day. A University’s lifeblood is its employees and students and people and the caliber of people here are top shelf.
What is your favorite aspect of working in Pitt’s athletic department?
The willingness to find solutions to problems. The thrust and concentration to ensure that everyone is working to provide the best possible experience for every student we have on campus!
If you could have dinner with three people, who would it be and why?
My father - to see him again, to hear his voice and take in his wisdom. Tie between Sir Alex Ferguson - to ask him questions, to learn more about the craft of coaching and managing and to get a straight answer as to whether he did indeed drill David Beckham in the face with a shoe at halftime OR Jose Mourinho - best living manager and discuss his methods and how he views the art and craft of coaching, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - so that I can learn from his genius, his pursuit of excellence, to understand how one could have constructed an entire symphony in his head.
