PITTSBURGH - Kimberly Sturk's goal with just 37 seconds remaining on the clock led the Pittsburgh women's soccer team over Villanova today, 3-2, in double overtime at the Morton Sports Complex. The goal was the first of Sturk's career and gave the Panthers their first win in Big East Conference Mid-Atlantic Division play.
Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead at 27:47 when redshirt freshman forward Annette Agredano (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson High Magnet) converted a corner kick from sophomore Leah Greenspoon (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion). Villanova then tied up the game with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. Kristin Dunst took a shot from the far right side and connected with the left side of the net.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead in the second half when forward Quinn Sellers took a short handoff from teammate Janessa Jeltema, and shot it from the left side out of the reach of Panther keeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/St. Christopher's), who had come out to challenge Jeltema's initial shot.
With just under three minutes remaining in regulation, Pittsburgh sophomore Jacqueline Fix (Center, Pa./Center) scored the tying goal when she lobbed a shot over the head of Villanova keeper Janel Schillig. Agredano was credited with the assist.
Freshman Emily Tipton (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) set up Sturk's (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) game-winning goal with a pass from the right side of the net. Sturk then beat out Schillig, finding the back of the net at the 119:23 mark and giving the Panthers the victory.
The shot count was tied at 22 for both teams. Redshirt junior Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Pa./Santa Clara) led Pittsburgh with seven shots, while Jessica Painchaud led the Wildcats with five.
The Panthers move to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the Mid-Atlantic Division. Villanova falls to 6-7 overall, 0-3 in the conference.
Pittsburgh returns to action this Wednesday, Oct. 4, when the Panthers host West Virginia in a divisional matchup at the Morton Sports Complex. Game time is 4 p.m.
