Women's Soccer Wraps Up 2000 Season

The Pittsburgh women's soccer team wrapped up the 2000 season by splitting a pair of games over the weekend. The Panthers fell to Syracuse, 2-1 on Oct. 20, but rebounded to claim a 1-0 shutout over Duquesne on Oct. 22.
The Orangewomen hosted Pittsburgh in Syracuse, N.Y., and held a 2-0 lead before the Panthers were able to get on the board. Syracuse scored its first goal of the game in the 37th minute for a 1-0 halftime advantage, then scored again just 1:35 into the second half. Sophomore defender Jacqueline Fix (Center, Pa./Center) helped Pittsburgh avoid a shutout when she scored an unassisted goal at the 60:06 mark. It was her fourth goal of the season.
The Panthers took nine shots on goal and were led by freshman forward Annette Agredano (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson High Magnet) with three. Junior keeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/St. Christopher's) made two saves in goal while recieving the loss.
Pittsburgh hosted Duquesne at the Morton Sports Complex on Sunday in its final game of the season. The Panthers and Dukes remained scoreless throughout the first half, though Pittsburgh held a commanding 11-3 shot advantage. Junior forward Melissa Smith (Lakewood, Colo./Bearcreek) then put the Panthers on top with her first career goal at the 70:40 mark. Her goal came unassisted on her only shot of the match and proved to be the game-winner.
Pittsburgh dominated the shot count all game, totalling 18 to the Dukes' eight, while also winning the corner kick battle, 12-1. The Panthers were led by junior forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) with seven shots on goal. Brown and sophomore Gretchen Ross (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler Area) split time in goal for Pittsburgh and combined for three saves on the afternoon.
The Panthers completed the season with an overall record of 6-12-1 and were 1-5 in the Big East Conference's Mid-Atlantic Division (seventh).
