Women's Hoops Routs Robert Morris, 81-49

PITTSBURGH - Monique Toney shot 100 percent from the field while Mandy Wittenmyer and Celeste Barkley recorded double-doubles to lead the Pittsburgh women's basketball team to an 81-49 rout over visiting Robert Morris, tonight at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pittsburgh jumped to a 20-4 lead inside the first nine minutes of the game and never looked back. In the span, the Panthers held the Colonials to just one 3-pointer and one free-throw. Pittsburgh went up by as many as 18 points, 24-6 at 9:21, before Robert Morris made their next five field goals. Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Toney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) combined for 23 points to help the Panthers to a 42-25 halftime lead.
Pittsburgh continued its dominance into the second half with a 12-5 run and rolled to the final score, 81-49.
Pittsburgh's defense was a key factor in the victory as it forced 29 Colonial turnovers. Seven different Panthers recorded steals, led by junior Jackie Campbell (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow-Munroe) with three. Conversely, Pittsburgh had just 11 total turnovers, the fewest in a single game in recent memory.
Pittsburgh also held the Colonials to just 12-of-47 (.255) shooting, including 5 of 28 (.179) in the second half, while the Panthers went 30 of 73 (.411) for the game.
Toney, a 5-5 guard, shot 6 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 2 from behind the 3-point arc, and went 5 of 5 from the free-throw line for a game-high 19 points on the night. She also dished out a game-high seven assists and grabbed two rebounds.
Wittenmyer, a sophomore forward, earned her second-straight double-double with a season-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Barkley (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) recorded career-highs in both points (15) and rebounds (11) for her first career double-double.
Pittsburgh improves to 2-0 on the year. The Panthers will visit Kent State on Saturday, Nov. 25. Tip off is 2 p.m.
