Panthers Fall to Kent State in Overtime, 77-67

KENT, OH - The Pittsburgh women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season as the Panthers fell to Kent State, 77-67 in overtime, today at the Memorial Athletic Center.
A 3-pointer from Kent State's Lori Krezeczowski with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Golden Flashes their first lead of the game, 63-62. Another 3-pointer by Pittsburgh sophomore Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) put the Panthers back on top, 65-63, but Krezeczowski connected on two free throws inside the last seven seconds to tie the game and force overtime.
With three Pittsburgh starters sidelined with five personal fouls, Kent State was able to dominate the five-minute overtime period, shooting 3 of 6 from the field and 6 of 6 from the free-throw line, to outscore the Panthers 12-2 for the final margin.
Pittsburgh held the Golden Flashes to just 24 percent shooting in the first half to take a 33-21 lead into intermission. The Panthers went on a 19-6 run to start the game before taking as much as a 17-point lead, 28-11, at the 4:06 mark. It was their largest lead of the game.
At 13:02 of the second half, Pittsburgh still held a 46-34 lead before Kent State went on a 13-2 run to pull within one at 48-47. But the Panthers were in foul trouble and with 1:05 left in regulation, junior Bettina Love (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) was forced to join seniors Celeste Barkley (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) and Monique Toney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) on the bench with five fouls apiece. Sophomore Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburgh, Pa./Cumberland Valley) also fouled out with 33 seconds remaining in the overtime period.
Selwyn led Pittsburgh with 16 points while Love and Toney each had 11. Wittenmyer led all players with 11 rebounds.
The Golden Flashes placed four players in double figures. Liz Beggs led all scorers with 21 points, including 13 in the second half, and was 11 of 11 from the charity stripe. With the win, Kent State extended its winning streak at home to 33 consecutive games.
Pittsburgh moves to 2-1 on the year. The Panthers travel to crosstown-rival Duquesne on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Tip off is 5 p.m.
