Sophomores Brooke Stewart and Mandy Wittenmyer combined for 47 points to lead the Pittsburgh women's basketball team over host Youngstown State, 86-67, tonight at the Beeghly Center.
Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) was just one point shy of tying her career high as she scored a game-high 24 points, including 20 in the first half. She shot 8 of 13 from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and went 3 of 4 from the free-throw line. Stewart additionally tied her career high with six rebounds.
Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) contributed a career-high 23 points, shooting 11 of 13 from the field and 1 of 2 from the line, while also grabbing a game-high seven boards. Junior Bettina Love (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) also dropped in double-figures with 16 points and dished out a career-high seven assists.
The Panthers struck early and often in the first half as they jumped out to a quick 17-2 lead at 15:49. Pittsburgh never gave up the lead for the remainder of the game, though Youngstown State was able to draw within two, 29-27, at 5:20. However, the Panthers were able to pull away and entered halftime with a 46-31 advantage.
The Penguins never got closer than 12 points in the second stanza, 47-35 at the 19:13 mark. Pittsburgh held as much as a 23-point lead at 5:42 (77-54).
The Panthers shot a season-high 61.8 percent for the game while holding Youngstown State to just 38.3 percent. Pittsburgh also went 5 of 9 (.556) from beyond the arc and 13 of 19 (.684) from the charity stripe.
Pittsburgh improves to 5-4 overall while the Penguins dropped to 3-8. The Panthers will host Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday, Dec. 21 at Fitzgerald Field House ( 5 p.m.).
