PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's basketball team placed three players in double-figures as the Panthers defeated visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore, 77-34, tonight at Fitzgerald Field House. Pittsburgh's record improves to 6-4 overall (0-1 Big East) while the Lady Hawks fall to 2-5.
Pittsburgh jumped out to a 15-2 lead at the 11:48 mark of the first half and never looked back. Maryland-Eastern Shore was able to pull withing three points, 16-13, at 8:17, but that was as close as the Lady Hawks would come. The Panthers led 32-17 at halftime and ran away from Maryland-Eastern Shore with a 17-4 run inside the first seven minutes of the second half to give them a 50-21 lead at 13:21.
The Panthers made 15 steals while forcing the Lady Hawks into 34 turnovers, the most by an opponent this season. Additionally, Maryland-Eastern Shore's 34 points was a season-low.
Junior Bettina Love (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) led all scorers with a career-high 20 points. She shot 9 of 13 from the field, including 1 of 1 from 3-point range, and went 1 of 2 at the free-throw line. Sophomores Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) and Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) also recorded double-figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. It was Stewart's second double-figure game in a row. Selwyn also made a career-high six steals and dished out another career-high eight assists. Additionally, junior Jackie Campbell (Munroe Township, Ohio/Stow-Munroe) tied her career high with five assists, while freshman Jenean Ford (Sauk Village, Ill./Thornwood) led all players with eight rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.
Pittsburgh will travel to California for a two-game series over the holidays. The Panthers will visit California-Irvine on Thursday, Dec. 28, before traveling to Loyola Marymount on Saturday, Dec. 30.
