LOS ANGELES, CA - The Pittsburgh women's basketball team suffered a 74-57 loss to Loyola Marymount in its second of two road games in California, today at the Gersten Pavilion.
The Panthers trailed by just three at halftime, 33-30, but the Lions opened the second half with a 13-5 run inside the first six minutes to extend their lead to 48-35 at the 14:34 mark. Pittsburgh pulled within nine, 56-47 at 8:44, but would draw no closer as Loyola Marymount would go on for the win.
The Panthers struggled offensively, shooting just 35 percent (21-of-60) from the field compared to the Lions who shot 54.5 percent (30-of-55). Sophomore forward Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led Pittsburgh with a game-high (tied) 17 points while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Jackie Campbell (Munroe Township, Ohio/Stow-Munroe) tied Wittenmyer with a career-high seven boards and contributed eight points, while senior Monique Toney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) dished out a game-high (tied) seven assists.
Loyola Marymount placed four players in double-figures, including Kate Murray and Rosa Bernasconi who recorded double-doubles.
The Panthers (6-6/0-1) return to Big East Conference action when they host Providence on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Tip off is 7 p.m.
