Pittsburgh Routs Delaware State, 65-36

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's basketball team used a 21-6 run in the second half to pull away from Delaware State as the Panthers routed the visiting Hornets, 65-36, today at Fitzgerald Field House. The win moves Pittsburgh to 4-3 on the season (0-1 Big East Conference).
The Panthers entered halftime with a 26-18 lead, but came out shooting in the second half as Pittsburgh went on a 21-6 run to extend its lead to 47-24 at the 7:15 mark. The Panthers held as much as a 29-point advantage, 55-26 at 3:09, before the Hornets began connecting on free throws. Pittsburgh outscored Delaware State 39-18 in the half as the Hornets were held to just 6-of-25 shooting from the field and 6-of-13 from the free-throw line.
The Panthers had three fresh faces step up for them in the victory. Junior Jackie Campbell (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Stow-Munroe) recorded double figures for the first time this season as she dropped in 10 points while also grabbing a career-high (tied) six rebounds and adding a team-high two steals. Freshman Sheila Stufflet (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson Senior) put in 18 minutes off the bench and had career highs of 11 points and eight rebounds, while fellow freshman Jenean Ford (Sauk Village, Ill.Thornwood) started her first career game at forward and grabbed a team-high nine boards. Senior Monique Toney (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) also scored in double figures for the third straight game, netting a game-high 12 points, while adding four assists.
The Panthers attacked immediately at the start of the game with a layup by sophomore Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) at 19:52. Pittsburgh jumped out in front, 12-4, at the 12:59 mark before Delaware State pulled within three (19-16) at 3:29. But layups by Campbell and sophomore Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) extended the Panthers' lead to eight at intermission.
The Hornets shot just 27.8 percent (15 of 54) for the game and 35.3 percent (6 of 17) from the free-throw line. Pittsburgh was 22 of 51 (.431) from the field, including 5 of 10 (.500) from 3-point range, and 16 of 25 from the charity stripe.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Dec. 16, when they host sixth-ranked Penn State at Fitzgerald Field House. Tip off is 2 p.m.
