Women's Soccer Falls to Rutgers, 3-2
9/29/2000
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team hosted Rutgers in a Big East Mid-Atlantic Division matchup and fell to the Scarlet Knights, 3-2, today at Morton Sports Complex. The loss gives the Panthers an overall record of 3-8, 0-3 in the conference, while Rutgers moves to 5-3-2, 1-0-1 in the Big East.
The Scarlet Knights got a quick jump on the scoring with their first goal tallied just 34 seconds into the match. Forward Shannon Nagle took a cross from Jenica Bridges and shot it past Panther keeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/St. Christopher's). Then, with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, Lisette Bradao converted a Scarlet Knight corner kick from Tiphanie Forst into a goal with a header at the 40:18 mark, giving Rutgers a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Scarlet Knights extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal by forward Keri Lages. Bridges was credited with her second assist of the game when she fed a pass to Lages, who shot the ball from the right side into the upper left corner of the net.
But the Panthers had a late-game surge, scoring two goals in five minutes. Panther forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) ended the possibility of a Rutgers shutout with a goal at the 78:37 mark. She took a pass from redshirt freshman Annette Agredano (Tucson, Ariz./Tucson High Magnet), shooting out of the reach of Scarlet Knight keeper Christine Caldwell into the far left side.
Agredano was then credited with Pittsburgh's second goal of the game at 82:36, when sophomore midfielder Lauren Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) served a free kick into the box. The ball skimmed Agredano's head and dribbled into the net from a yard out.
The Panthers out-shot the Scarlet Knights 18-9, including a count of 11-4 in the second half. Brown made four saves on the afternoon for Pittsburgh, while Caldwell was credited with six for Rutgers. Ruiz led the Panthers with fives shots. Brandao led the Scarlet Knights with two.
Pittsburgh returns to action this Sunday, Oct. 1, when the Panthers host Villanova in a Mid-Atlantic Division matchup at Morton Sports Complex. Game time is noon.
