Seton Hall Defeats Pittsburgh Men's Soccer 1-0
10/12/2002
PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh suffered its fourth loss of the season today as Seton Hall defeated the Panthers 1-0 Saturday at Founder?s Field. Pittsburgh is now 7-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Big East while Seton Hall improves their record to 7-4-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the Big East.
Seton Hall?s Tom Dziama slid a shot past goalkeeper Justin Gaul in the 32nd minute with only 13 minutes left in the first half. The Panthers could not seem to find the net as they recorded only four first half shots compared to Seton Hall?s six.
The second half the Panthers came out ready to play. Pittsburgh vigorously attacked the Seton Hall defense but still could not capitalize on any scoring opportunities. Twenty-three minutes into the second half Bryan Hopper began the attack with a blasting shot just short of the goal?s upper right corner.
With six minutes remaining in the half senior Miles Dowiak received a pass off of a re-start which he fired across the field perfectly reaching the head of Nate Montgomery. Montgomery headed the ball towards the goal, but the shot was deflected by Seton Hall goalkeeper Alex McDonald. Just minutes later, Jeff Krause blasted a shot which was also denied by a determined Seton Hall defense.
Sophomore Matt Sherrill took a powerful shot at the net with two minutes to go in the half but once again the shot was rejected. The game was very physical for both teams as the Panthers recorded 17 fouls and one yellow card while the Pirates finished with 15 fouls and two yellow cards.
The Panthers are next in action again on Wednesday, October 12, 2002 against Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. here at Founder?s Field.
