10/16/2002
PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh Men?s Soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime loss to Virginia Tech Wednesday at Founder?s Field. The loss drops the Panther?s record to 7-5-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big East while Virginia Tech improves to 8-5-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the Big East.
The Panthers took an early lead in tonight?s game. Only fifteen minutes into the game freshman Keeyan Young took control of the Hokie defense. Young sent a controlled pass to senior Bryan Hopper who blasted the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The 1-0 lead lasted until half-time.
Virginia Tech tied the game at 1-1 as it scored in the first six minutes. Only six minutes into the second half, freshman Peer Rogge slipped a ball passed the Panther defense to teammate Lasse Mertins. Mertins slid the ball past Panthers goalkeeper, Justin Gaul.
The score remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation play. A Panthers attempt to retaliate in overtime failed when Virginia Tech?s Kenny Jonmarie muscled through the Panther defense, finding the feet of Bailey Alleman. Alleman shot the game winning goal only three minutes into over-time play.
The Panther?s are back in action this Saturday when they face Eagles of Boston College at noon in Boston.
