10/30/2002
PITTSBURGH- The University of Pittsburgh defeated Cleveland State 3-0 Wednesday at Founders Field. This win improves Pittsburgh to 8-7-1 overall while Cleveland State drops to 7-6-1 overall.
Despite the cold, wet conditions, the Panthers were able to score three goals against a feisty Cleveland State. In the 26th minute of play senior Bryan Hopper lofted a corner kick over the heads of the Cleveland State?s defense. The corner kick resulted in a mixup inside the box when Nate Montgomery took control, feeding a crisp pass to junior Clay Haflich, who placed the ball inside the near post and into the goal. The goal set the pace for the remainder of the game.
The contest was full of opportunities and breakthroughs for the Panthers. Despite the nine offsides calls on the Panthers, they still managed to score two goals on breakthroughs. The second goal of the evening came in the 81st minute when Senior Miles Dowiak sent a perfect through ball to freshman Keeyan Young. Young used his blazing speed to beat Cleveland State?s defense. He faked the Viking goalkeeper to the right, then went left, placing the ball perfectly in the back of the net.
With only three minutes remaining in the game Toure Weaver split the defense on a pass to forward Marco Carrizales. Carrizales beat the goalkeeper and placed the ball into the back of the net.
The Panthers are back in action Saturday when they take on Providence at Founder?s Field at 1 p.m. This is the Panthers final home game.
