PITTSBURGH? The Pittsburgh men?s soccer team played Marshall to a 3-3 tie Wednesday night at Founders Field. Pittsburgh is now 2-2-3 overall.
The Panthers managed 14 shots during the game and goalkeeper Justin Lowery made fives saves.
Marshall scored the first goal in the 7th minute of the game. Michael McDonald crossed the ball to Jarod Dombrowski who dove through the air and headed the ball into the net. The goal was a result of an indirect kick following a Pittsburgh foul.
The Panthers answer back quickly when senior Billy Brush scored a goal five minutes later with the assist from sophomore Tyler Bastinelli.
Keeyan Young increased the Panthers? lead to 2-1 when he went one-on-one with Marshall goalkeeper Greg Terhune. Thomas DeCato and Steve Cavalier both received assists on the goal. Justin Lowery made a strong save from a shot by McDonald in the 42nd minute of the game. At halftime, Pittsburgh led 2-1 and outshot Marshall 7-4.
In the second half, Pittsburgh went up 3-1 when Young assisted Brush on scoring his second goal of the game in the 58th minute. Brush finished with four shots and two goals. Young had two shots including one goal and one assist.
Trailing 3-1, Marshall?s Jeremy Ashe headed the ball into the net in the 87th minute of the game on an assist from Clayton Cochrane. The Thundering Herd tied the game in the 89th minute when Mike Barbera scored off of an assist from McDonald. McDonald had two assists on the game.
The match continued into two overtime periods. Lowery started off overtime play strong for the Panthers when he made a save off a straight-on shot from Karim Boukemis. Freshman Chris Bastidas took a straight on shot for the Panthers however Terhune made the save for Marshall. Brush attempted to win the game and complete a hat trick with a close shot in the 104th minute of the game however both teams remained scoreless in two periods of overtime.
Pittsburgh is back in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Founder?s Field. The Panthers will face Seton Hall in their third Big East game of the season.
