PITTSBURGH - Four Panthers scored in double figures as Pitt came back from a five-point deficit early in the second half to defeat the Ohio Girls Basketball Report (OGBR) Legends, 77-60, at the Petersen Events Center on Tuesday evening.
The game was the Panthers' second and final exhibition tune-up before the regular-season opener on Friday, Nov. 18 vs. William & Mary at the TD Banknorth Classic in Burlington, Vt.
Pitt led for much of the first half but the OGBR Legends battled back to take a one-point lead at the break, 36-35. The Legends continued their run with the first four points of the second half to push the advantage to five but an 11-0 run by Pitt was enough to end the threat.
Freshman guard Maddy Brown (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) connected on five of her six three-point baskets after halftime and finished with a game-high 18 points. Junior Mallorie Winn (San Diego, Calif./Bishop's/Georgia Tech) finished with 14 points, five assists, five steals, four rebounds and three blocks.
Pitt shot just 36.3 percent from the field, but even when the Panthers were missing shots, they were getting rebounds and forcing turnovers on the defensive end. Pitt finished with 43 rebounds, 22 on the offensive glass, and forced 30 Legends turnovers while committing just 10 of their own.
Senior forward Cheron Taylor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) poured in 10 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds (10 offensive) to complete the double-double. Taylor also had five assists and two blocks while playing a total of 37 minutes. Freshman Xenia Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) had her second consecutive strong effort with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three of Pitt's 14 steals.
The OGBR Legends were led by Larecha Jones with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Kelly Adams with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Pitt's opener against William & Mary will be played at 6 p.m., followed by host Vermont against Colgate at 8 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 970 AM, with Greg Linnelli handling the play-by-play and Jennifer Tuscano adding color commentary.
NOTES: The Panthers made nine of 18 three-point attempts, while Brown was 6-of-10 behind the arc...Pitt held the OGBR Legends to just 24 percent shooting in the second half and just under 40 percent for the game...the game was played using an experimental three-point line of 20 feet, six inches.
