SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—An unanswered second half goal propelled Seton Hall past the Pitt women’s soccer team by a close 1-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. Despite outshooting the Pirates 13-11 in the game, the Panthers fell short in the Big East contest.
An early shot taken by Pitt’s Liz Carroll soared wide. The Panthers had their first scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute, but Seton Hall goalkeeper Elizabeth Bond snagged the shot taken by forward Katelyn Ruhe. Pitt failed to capitalize on several other offensive drives, including a saved shot taken by defender Christina Nicassio in the 37th minute.
Both programs entered halftime with a scoreless 0-0 tie.
Seton Hall broke the 0-0 tie with a goal near the beginning of the second period. In the 52nd minute, Pirate midfielder Katie Andreski received a crossing pass into the middle of the box from Taylor Wilson and scored the game-winner. Caitlyn Milazzo also assisted with a lead pass from the field’s right side.
Despite surpassing the Pirates in number of shots on goal 6-5, the Panthers were unable to score. In the 72nd minute, midfielder Laura Berbert nearly evened the score, but her attempt was blocked by Seton Hall defender Megan Mills.
With the loss, Pitt dropped to 4-9-0 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play, while Seton Hall improved its record to 5-5-2 and 1-3-1.
Pitt looks to rebound against Big East opponent Connecticut as it begins a stretch of four home games on Friday, Oct. 10. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Founders Field.
