INDIANOLA, Pa. — University of Pittsburgh men’s soccer team broke its nine-game slump and put a stop to West Virginia’s four-game winning streak with a 0-0 tie against the archrival and 25th-ranked Mountaineers in a Big East showdown here tonight at Founders Field.
The Pitt (1-9-1, 0-5-1 Big East) defense stood up to the Mountaineer offense throughout the first half as WVU registered nine shots to the Panthers’ zero. Freshman goalkeeper Keegan Gunderson (Circle Pine.Minn/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) notched four of his seven saves on the day in the first half alone.
West Virginia did not let up in the second half as they tallied eight corner kicks and six more shots, but were once again held in check by a stout Panther defense.
The tie broke a nine-game slump for Pitt and was the first point scored in Big East Conference action this season.
The Panthers hit the road for the next two games, traveling to Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Oct. 10 for a 1 p.m. game with Georgetown. Pitt will then travel to Connecticut on Oct. 17 to take on the Huskies.
