PITTSBURGH -- The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped its second straight game, 1-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay here today at the home opener at Founders Field.
The game also marked the first contest of the 2009 City of Pittsburgh Invitational, a series of games hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and Robert Morris University.
The Phoenix (3-0-1) offense was aggressive throughout the game, controlling the tempo and possession for the majority of each half. Green Bay got on the score board when Andrew Stone registered the lone goal for the Phoenix off a pass from J.C. Banks from outside the top of the box at midfield driving a low liner near the right post for the 1-0 lead.
Despite UWGB registering 16 shots and five corner kicks in the opening half the Panthers' (1-3) defense kept them in the game.
The aggressive play in the second half increased as multiple yellow cards were accessed to each team; seven cards in total. Though the Pitt offense had its chances in the second half with four corner kicks, the stout Green Bay defense kept the Panthers in check, holding steady each time.
The Panthers will wrap up the 2009 City of Pittsburgh Invitational when they host La Salle for their second consecutive home game this Sunday, Sept. 13 at Founders Field. The game will begin at 1:00 pm.
