PITTSBURGH – The Pitt men’s soccer team (5-3-1, 0-3-0 ACC) collected its sixth shutout of the season Wednesday afternoon at Ambrose Urbanic Field after blanking the Virginia Military Institute Keydets (0-9-0, 0-1-0 SoCon), 4-0.
Today’s game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, however due to inclement weather the game was rescheduled to this afternoon. The Panthers took advantage of having some extra time to prepare for the non-conference matchup as three different Pitt players netted goals this afternoon.
“Obviously scoring four goals is a plus because it has been difficult for us to score goals,” head coach Joe Luxbacher said. “I still think we can play better soccer. I was very pleased with the score, but I wasn’t as pleased with how we played. I thought we were sloppy at times and I just thought we could be better.”
Senior goalkeeper and captain Dan Lynd only made two saves today, but that was just enough to reach his 200th career save, ranking him eighth in program history. The shutout also ties him for fourth in the record book with 14 career shutouts.
Sophomore midfielder Raj Kahlon got the Panthers’ momentum started in the 28th minute as he received a cross from sophomore midfielder Darcy Bloemen in the box. Kahlon fired the shot in to the upper right corner, giving Pitt its first lead of the game.
With just five minutes remaining in the opening half, the Panthers drew a foul in the Keydets’ box lining Pitt up for a penalty kick. Junior midfielder Kevin Murray successfully sent the ball past VMI’s goalie Alex Guerra, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.
Pitt continued to maintain possession throughout the second half as Kahlon found the net again in the 66th minute. Sophomore forward Kevin Angulo found Kahlon across the box and sent the ball to the upper right corner, extending the Panthers’ lead to 3-0.
The final Pitt goal came from Angulo in the 76th minute. After receiving a pass from Kahlon, Angulo strategically drew Guerra out of the goal and found the back left corner of the net.
The Panthers sent in nine shots on goal, while VMI only attempted five total shots.
Pitt resumes ACC action on Friday, Oct. 2, as it hosts the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
