PITTSBURGH - A cold shooting night for the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team led to a 60-49 defeat to Wake Forest on Thursday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
Sophomore Stasha Carey scored a team-high 11 points, but the Panthers (10-13, 2-8 ACC) shot a season-low 28.8 percent from the floor (17-of-59).
"That wasn't the performance we were hoping for tonight," head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio said. "We knew Wake Forest was talented and would present some problems, but our struggles were on the offensive end. We were just not able to find an answer."
Wake Forest (12-11, 3-7 ACC), on the other hand, was 46.9 percent from the floor (23-of-49) and had three players score in double figures, led by Ariel Stephenson with 16 points. Amber Campbell (15) and Milan Quinn (14) also reached double digits, while Quinn added 11 rebounds.
Wake Forest raced out to an 11-3 lead which forced Pitt into a quick timeout with 4:13 left in the first quarter. The Demon Deacons would ultimately make 8-of-14 shots in the opening 10 minutes and led 20-10 after one.
Pitt missed its first three shots from the floor in the second quarter, and conversely, Wake Forest made its first three and forced another Pitt timeout with the Deacs up 26-10 at the 7:04 mark of the opening half.
The Panthers though, turned to their defense and held Wake Forest to just two points for the remainder of the half. Pitt outscored Wake 11-2 down the stretch and cut the Demon Deacons' lead to 28-21 at halftime.
Carey had nine points to lead all scorers at intermission.
After the two teams traded buckets to open the second half, Wake Forest hit back-to-back 3-pointers which increased the Deacs' lead back to 12 points (38-26) and forced Pitt into its third timeout. Wake Forest led 48-33 after three.
The Panthers would not be able to get within single digits in the fourth quarter, despite outscoring Wake 16-12 in the final 10 minutes.
Pitt is now off for a week and will return to action next Thursday at the Petersen Events Center when they host Louisville, who is currently riding a 15-game winning streak.
