PITTSBURGH - Graduate transfer center Brandi Harvey-Carr posted her fourth consecutive performance reaching double figures in the scoring column with 14 points for Pitt women's basketball (9-5, 0-1 ACC) in the Panthers' 82-50 ACC season-opening loss to No. 14/11 Miami (12-2, 1-1 ACC) Monday night at Petersen Events Center.
Harvey-Carr was the lone Panther to post 10 points or more. Freshman point guard Jasmine Whitney had eight points to go along with five assists and four rebounds, and sophomore forward Brenna Wise followed with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Panthers used their third different starting lineup in the last three games as Destinie Gibbs joined at forward.
Although there were four lead changes and two ties in the first quarter, 11 turnovers and a 10-0 run lasting the final 3:18 hindered the Panthers to start the game. Pitt trailed by 13 at the first break, down 24-11.
In the second quarter, the Panthers chipped away at the deficit with a 7-0 run, including four points from Kalista Walters, to make it 27-20 at the 6:59 mark. However, the Hurricanes roared back with a 21-2 run lasting the final 6:27 of the period. Miami's Laura Cornelius did not miss for the entirety of the half, going 6-of-6 from the field, 5-of-5 from long range and 2-of-2 from the free throw line for 19 points. The Hurricanes held a 48-22 advantage at halftime.
Miami started the second half on a 7-2 run, however, the Panthers showed signs of life as they took off on a 14-4 run to cut their deficit down to 21 points (59-38) with 2:25 left in the third. Overall, Pitt outscored the Hurricanes 18-16, with eight of Harvey-Carr's total 14 points coming in that period. The Panthers entered the final quarter trailing 64-40.
Pitt could not get much going in the fourth quarter, as they fell back into a 30-point deficit at the 5:40 mark, down 72-42. The Panthers faced their largest disadvantage of the season when Miami reached a 33-point lead with 1:29 remaining (79-46). At the final buzzer, the No. 14/11 Hurricanes claimed an 82-50 victory.
Miami handily out-shot the Panthers, 52.5 percent (31-of-59) to 36.5 percent (19-of-52) and held a 36-29 advantage on the boards. Forty-nine of the Hurricanes' 82 points came off the bench, including a career-high 24 from Cornelius, who ended up 8-of-8 from the field, 6-of-6 from long range and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.
