Panthers Pick Up First ACC Win, 56-43, Over Eagles

PITTSBURGH - Sophomore forward Kalista Walters came off the bench to score a season-high 19 points for Pitt women's basketball (10-5, 1-1) as the Panthers picked up their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the year, 56-43, over Boston College (8-7, 1-1) Thursday night at Petersen Events Center.
Classmate Brenna Wise chipped in 15 points as Pitt's only other double-figure scorer. She added five rebounds and a career-high four steals. Kauai Bradley tied her career high with three triples, going 3-of-5 from long range. She ended with a near double-double of nine points and eight rebounds.
A jumper from Destinie Gibbs and two free throws from Jasmine Whitney put Pitt into a 4-0 lead to start the game. Boston College got its first points from reigning ACC Rookie of the Week Georgia Pineau at the 7:16 mark (4-2), before Wise hit three consecutive field goals to extend the Panthers' lead to 10-2 at 5:23. The Eagles cut the Panthers' margin to as few as four with 2:45 remaining in the period (10-6), but Pitt outscored BC 5-1 to end the quarter with a 15-7 lead.
Walters contributed the first eight of Pitt's second-quarter points as the Panthers reached a 23-10 advantage at 5:11. At the 1:58 mark, she made a layup to give Pitt its largest lead of the game (28-12). BC's Martina Mosetti hit two free throws with 1:47 to go before halftime to set the score 28-14 at the break. The Panthers held the Eagles to 0-of-12 from the field in the quarter, with 16 consecutive misses since the 2:45 mark in the first.
Boston College broke its streak without a field goal at the 9:02 mark in the third quarter when Mariella Fasoula made a layup to set the score at 28-16. The Eagles cut the Panthers' lead to as few as seven points (35-28) at the 1:20 mark after a 12-4 run and a 0-of-6 slump from the field by Pitt. The Panthers hit four consecutive free throws to end the quarter up 39-28. They went 7-of-7 from the line in the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Bradley hit back-to-back triples to bring Pitt's lead back to 15 points (45-30) with 5:58 remaining. Boston College did not back away and brought the game to a nine-point margin with 1:11 left and were forced into a fouling situation. The Panthers stayed hot from the charity stripe and went 5-of-6 in the final minute to seal a 56-43 victory.
The Panthers had 14 assists on 18 made field goals while shooting 37.5 percent from the field. Pitt held Boston College to a 22.9 percent clip.
Pitt, which led the ACC in free-throw percentage prior to the game (74.3 percent), shot a season-high 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe.
