Diop, Nelson Lead Pitt in Scoring
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt junior forward Yacine Diop led Pitt women's basketball (5-4, 0-0 ACC) with 18 points and seven rebounds in a 73-52 road loss to No. 10/11 West Virginia (8-0, 0-0 Big 12) Thursday at WVU Coliseum.
Freshman Kyla Nelson added a career-high 14 points as the Panthers' only other double-figure scorer. Junior forward Kauai Bradley had team highs of six steals and four assists while posting nine points and three rebounds.
The tenth-ranked Mountaineers had the upper hand in rebounding (39-29), field goal percentage (.463 to .339), points off turnovers (21-11), and second chance points (15-5).
It was not an ideal start for the Panthers, who were buried by a 12-0 run to open the game, including back-to-back threes from the Mountaineers' Teana Muldrow. Pitt was plagued by fouls early in the contest, with Kalista Walters picking up her second at the 6:11 mark. The Panthers trailed by as many as 16 (24-8) in the first 10 minutes, and held a 13-point deficit at the first break (26-13). Nelson had eight points in the first.
The Mountaineers tied their largest lead of the half (29-13) after a three from Naomi Davenport at 9:35 in the second quarter, but the Panthers answered with a 10-0 run that included five points from Diop and five from Bradley to bring Pitt within six points of WVU, down 29-23 at 5:17. Although the Panthers were held scoreless for the remainder of the half and WVU went on a 7-0 run, each team scored 10 total points in the quarter to make it 36-23 at halftime.
West Virginia controlled a double-figure margin for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 24 (67-43) with 3:51 remaining in the contest.
The Mountaineers' 73 points were the second fewest scored in any of their eight games this season, save for a 70-56 win over No. 18 Texas A&M Sunday.
