The Opening Tip
- Pitt (8-7, 0-2) travels to Blacksburg, Va. to face Virginia Tech (11-4, 0-2) Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Cassell Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network (WTAE locally in Pittsburgh) and is scheduled to tipoff at 12 p.m.
- The Panthers have used 11 different starting lineups this season, tied for the most in the NCAA. Pitt started five freshmen for the first time in program history Tuesday at Louisville.
- Ryan Luther, one of four players in the ACC averaging a double-double, has missed the past five games with a stress reaction in his right foot. Luther is averaging 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
- Pitt has dropped four consecutive ACC road contests dating back to an 83-72 win at Boston College, Feb. 8, 2017.
- Pitt was held scoreless over an 8:11 stretch in the opening half of play as Louisville used a 17-0 run en route to a 77-51 win over the Panthers.
- Parker Stewart knocked down three three-point field goals and finished with a team-high 12 points, six rebounds and two assists.
- Marcus Carr (11) and Shamiel Stevenson (10) also scored in double figures as Pitt freshmen combined for 39 of the team's 51 points. Stevenson also added six rebounds and three steals.
- Pitt struggled from the field shooting just 34.7 percent (17-of-49) for the game, including 24.0 percent (6-of-25) from three-point range.
- The Panthers were outscored 44-18 in the paint and were also outrebounded, 42-29, in the contest.
- Marcus Carr is averaging 12.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in Pitt's eight wins. He is 34-of-57 (.596) from the field, including 13-of-24 (.542) from three-point range, in those contests. Carr has eight double-figure scoring games and leads the team in assists (60) and minutes played (424) on the season.
- Jared Wilson-Frame is second on the team in scoring at 12.4 points per game and leads the Panthers with 29 three-point field goals. Wilson-Frame has scored in double figures 11 times and made three or more three-point field goals in a game four times. He has struggled from beyond the arc over the past four games going just 4-of-31 (.129) from three-point range.
- Shamiel Stevenson has scored in double figures eight times and is ninth among ACC freshmen in scoring at 10.3 points per game. He is second on the team in rebounding (5.3 rpg.), while shooting 52.4 percent (54-of-103) from the field. Stevenson is averaging 13.0 points on 10-of-15 (.667) shooting through two league games.
- Ryan Luther is one of four players in the ACC (along with Duke's Marvin Bagley III, North Carolina's Luke Maye and Notre Dame's Bonzie Colson) averaging a double-double. Luther (12.7 ppg. and 10.1 rpg.) has missed the past five games due to a stress reaction in his right foot.
- Khameron Davis is shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, including a team-high 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from three-point range. Davis is 12-of-20 (.600) from three-point range over the past six games.
- The Panthers' Canadian tandem of Marcus Carr and Shamiel Stevenson combines to average 21.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game, while shooting 49.5 percent (106-of-214) from the field. The pair has combined for 16 double-figure scoring games.
- The Panthers started five true freshmen in a game for the first time in program history Tuesday at Louisville. Boston College was the last ACC team to start five true freshmen in a game - Dec. 6, 2015.
- Pitt has started four or more freshmen in each of the past five games. Marcus Carr (5) Khameron Davis (5), Terrell Brown (4), Shamiel Stevenson (3), Parker Stewart (3) and Peace Ilegomah (1) have each started games in that span.
- Parker Stewart is 21-of-54 (.389) from beyond the three-point arc and is averaging 8.7 points per game over the past 10 contests. Stewart has made two or more threes in five consecutive games and in seven of the past 10 contests.
- Pitt's freshman class has accounted for 76.0 percent (127-of-167) of the team's scoring over the past three games. The group has seven of Pitt's nine double figure scoring games in that span.
- Pitt is shooting 51.7 percent (225-of-435) from inside the three-point arc on the season. The Panthers are 119-of-360 (.331) from beyond the arc over the first 15 games of the season.
- The Panthers are shooting 47.5 percent (197-of-415) from the field, 37.1 percent (75-of-202) from three-point range and 72.1 percent (119-of-165) from the foul line in their eight wins. In contrast, Pitt has shot just 39.7 percent (147-of-370) from the field, 27.8 percent (44-of-158) from three-point range and 66.9 percent (87-of-130) from the foul line in its seven losses.
- Pitt has won four consecutive games and is 16-14 in games played on Jan. 6. The Panthers posted an 89-84 win over Georgia Tech (Jan. 6, 2016) in the last game on the date.
- The Panthers have not lost three consecutive games to open league play since joining the ACC. Pitt has not been 0-3 in conference play since the start of Big East play during the 2011-12 season.
