The Opening TIp
- Pitt (8-8, 0-3) returns home to host No. 7 Duke (13-2, 1-2) Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Petersen Events Center. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and is scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
- The Panthers have used 11 different starting lineups this season, tied for the second most in the NCAA. Pitt has started five freshmen in each of the past two games.
- Ryan Luther, one of four players in the ACC averaging a double-double, has missed the past six games with a stress reaction in his right foot. Luther is averaging 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
- Pitt is 14-5 all-time at the Petersen Events Center against teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll.
- Pitt shot a season-high 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from beyond the three-point arc but was unable to overcome a 22-7 deficit in points off turnovers in an 81-67 road loss to Virginia Tech.
- Jared Wilson-Frame knocked down four three-point field goals and matched a season-high with 20 points. He added four rebounds and a steal in the loss.
- Marcus Carr (14) and Parker Stewart (12) also scored in double figures for the Panthers. Carr added five rebounds and four assists, while Stewart went 4-of-5 from three-point range and added a season-best four assists.
- Pitt won the rebounding battle, 31-26, but was outscored in the paint by a 50-18 margin. Shamiel Stevenson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Panthers.
- Pitt has started four or more freshmen in each of the past six games. Marcus Carr (6) Khameron Davis (6), Terrell Brown (5), Shamiel Stevenson (4), Parker Stewart (3) and Peace Ilegomah (1) have each started games in that span.
- Parker Stewart is 25-of-59 (.424) from beyond the three-point arc and is averaging 9.0 points per game over the past 11 contests. Stewart has made two or more threes in six consecutive games and in eight of the past 11 contests.
- Jared Wilson-Frame leads the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game and 33 three-point field goals. He has scored in double figures 12 times and made three or more three-point field goals in a game five times.
- Marcus Carr is averaging 12.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in Pitt's eight wins. He is 34-of-57 (.596) from the field, including 13-of-24 (.542) from three-point range, in those contests. Carr has nine double-figure scoring games and leads the team in assists (64) and minutes played (457) on the season.
- Shamiel Stevenson has scored in double figures eight times and is 10th among ACC freshmen in scoring at 10.0 points per game. He is second on the team in rebounding (5.6 rpg.), while shooting 52.3 percent (56-of-107) from the field. Stevenson is averaging 10.3 points on 12-of-19 (.632) shooting through three league games.
- Pitt's freshman class has accounted for 73.1 percent (171-of-234) of the team's scoring over the past four games. The group has nine of Pitt's 12 double figure scoring games in that span.
- Khameron Davis is shooting 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field, including a team-high 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from three-point range. Davis is averaging 8.3 points per game while going 13-of-22 (.591) from three-point range over the past eight games.
- The Panthers' Canadian tandem of Marcus Carr and Shamiel Stevenson combines to average 21.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game, while shooting 49.1 percent (113-of-230) from the field. The pair has combined for 17 double-figure scoring games.
- Parker Stewart is averaging 12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, while going 11-of-25 (.440) from three-point range, over the past four contests. He has scored in double figures in four consecutive games and seven times overall. Stewart is second on the team with 28 three-point field goals.
- Pitt is shooting 51.4 percent (235-of-457) from inside the three-point arc on the season. The Panthers are 131-of-386 (.339) from beyond the arc over the first 15 games of the season.
- The Panthers are shooting 47.5 percent (197-of-415) from the field, 37.1 percent (75-of-202) from three-point range and 72.1 percent (119-of-165) from the foul line in their eight wins. In contrast, Pitt has shot just 40.4 percent (169-of-418) from the field, 30.4 percent (56-of-184) from three-point range and 67.6 percent (98-of-145) from the foul line in its eight losses.
- The Panthers have not lost four consecutive games to open league play since joining the ACC. Pitt has not been 0-4 in conference play since the start of Big East play during the 2011-12 season.
- Pitt has defeated a team ranked in the top 15 of the AP Poll in each of the past 10 seasons. The Panthers topped No. 11 Virginia, 88-76, in overtime last season under Kevin Stallings.
- The Panthers are 2-4 all-time against teams ranked seventh in the AP Poll. Pitt has dropped three consecutive matchups against teams ranked seventh in the AP Poll with the last contest coming against North Carolina in the 2016 ACC Tournament.
- Oklahoma freshman Trae Young currently leads the NCAA in scoring (29.4 ppg.) and assists (10.2 apg.). Pitt radio analyst Dick Groat is the only player in NCAA history to lead the country in both categories in the same season. Groat averaged 26.0 points and 7.6 assists per game at Duke during the 1951-52 season en route to earning National Player of the Year honors.
