PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (6-5, 0-0 ACC) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon inside the Petersen Events Center as the West Virginia Mountaineers handed them a 77-43 defeat. The loss drops the Panthers record to 6-5 on the season while West Virginia improves to 5-2 overall.
"Obviously anytime you play really good opponents, and West Virginia is a great basketball team and they're going to do extremely well, you learn a lot about yourself," stated head coach Lance White. "We're a team that's a work in progress and we're going to have to keep getting better each and every day."
The difference in the game on Saturday was the way the Mountaineers were able to turn Pitt turnovers into points as they turned 28 Panthers mishaps into 31 points. On the other side, Pitt forced 19 West Virginia turnovers and they were only able to score 10 points off those chances.
Sophomore forward Cara Judkins had a strong game for the Panthers as she netted a team-high 12 points, nine rebounds and three blocks across 26 minutes of work while Cassidy Walsh finished off her afternoon with nine points and four rebounds in the loss. Danielle Garven capped her game with eight points, three rebounds and three steals while Kauai Bradley came off the bench and netted six points, six rebounds and three steals across a season-high 35 minutes of work.
The Mountaineers were able to race out to the early lead on the Panthers in the first quarter as they took the 14-0 lead through four minutes. The Panthers were able to respond with a nice 9-2 run that was capped by a Walsh triple to make the score 16-9 in favor of the Mountaineers. After a couple West Virginia buckets, Jahsyni Knight closed the scoring in the quarter with a beautiful drive and finish off the glass to send the game to the second quarter with the Mountaineers leading 21-11.
After Walsh opened the second quarter with a triple, the Mountaineers were able to respond with points on four straight possessions to take the 29-16 advantage over the Panthers. Pitt continued to fight and claw defensively over the next couple of minutes as they were able to score six straight behind a Kyla Nelson runner in the lane and a Judkins layup after a great feed from Jasmine Whitney to cut the Mountaineers lead to seven, 29-22. However, West Virginia was able to finish the half on an 8-1 run to take the 37-23 edge into the locker room.
The Mountaineers came out of the locker room on fire from the floor as they were able to put the game out of reach for the Panthers. The visitors scored the first eight points of the second half as Tynice Martin scored six in the run to make the score 45-23. The Panthers were able to respond with an 8-3 run as Knight, Judkins and Nelson each netted layups to make the score 48-31 in favor of the Mountaineers. The quarter ended with five straight for WVU as they went to the final quarter with the 53-31 edge.
The Mountaineers were able to run away with the game in the final frame as they outscored the Panthers 24-12 across the final 10 minutes of action. WVU turned 11 Pitt turnovers into 15 points in the final quarter as they collected the 77-43 road victory.
Martin finished off her impressive game with a game-high 26 points and seven rebounds as she connected on 9-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-8 from behind the arc. Naomi Davenport was strong down low for the Mountaineers as she finished with 18 points and six rebounds while Kysre Gondrezick finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six boards in the win.
The Panthers will now have 10 days off before they return to the court as they will welcome UNCW to the Petersen Events Center on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Tip is set for 7:00 pm.
