Strong Second Half Propels Panthers To School Day Victory On Tuesday

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (2-2, 0-0 ACC) got back to their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon as they notched a 69-60 victory over the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on School Day at the Petersen Events Center. A crowd of 6,730 cheered the Panthers on to victory as Pitt moved to 8-3 all-time in School Day games.
Aysia Bugg was the lone Pitt player in double figures on Tuesday as she netted a game-high 17 points, leading Pitt in scoring for the third straight game. Pitt had a pair of freshmen dominate the glass in the win as Amber Brown ripped down a career-high 12 boards to go along with nine points while Emy Hayford came off the bench and posted eight points and a career-best 10 rebounds.
The difference in the game was the Panthers defense in the second half as they held the Knights to just 28.1% shooting across the final 20 minutes including just 2-for-9 from behind the arc after connecting on nine triples in the first half. Pitt outscored Fairleigh Dickinson by 10 in the second half to secure their second win of the season.
After falling behind 6-0 early on, the Panthers offense got going a couple minutes into play as they were able to score 14 straight to take the 14-6 lead. Pitt saw six different players scoring during the 14-0 run to take the lead with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter. The Knights however responded with a 14-5 run to close out the quarter with the 20-19 lead as they connected on five triples in the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter was a tightly contested quarter by both sides as the Knights were able to get out to a 25-21 lead before Dayshanette Harris and Bugg netted jumpers to tie things back up just three minutes into the second. Fairleigh Dickinson was able to get out to an eight point lead, 38-30, with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half but a pair of free throws from Jahsyni Knight and a jumper from Bugg cut the Panthers halftime deficit to one, 38-37.
Pitt came out of the locker room strong once again on Tuesday as they outscored the Knights 19-12 while holding them to just 4-for-13 from the floor. Pitt opened the quarter on a 10-0 run as Bugg finished off a three-point play and Gabbie Green buried a triple to give the Panthers the 47-38 lead. A fast break layup by Brown game Pitt their biggest lead, 51-39, midway through the third and Pitt never looked back.
The Pitt defense held the Knights to just 5-for-19 from the floor across the final 10 minutes as Pitt outscored them 13-10 to earn the home victory, 69-60.
Pitt controlled the paint on Tuesday as they outscored the Knights 36-20 while also owning the fast break scoring category, 16-5. The 48 rebounds and 14 offensive boards were also season-highs for the Panthers.
Fairleigh Dickinson saw four players score in double figures led by Rachael Niles who netted 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Maria Roters came off the bench and scored 13 points and five rebounds in the loss.

UP NEXT
- Pitt will close out their four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as they welcome the Duquesne Dukes to the Petersen Events Center for the City Game at 2:00 pm. Saturday's game will be a "Gold Out" at the Pete as fans are encouraged to wear their Pitt gold and cheer on the Panthers.
- After Saturday, Pitt will have three straight away from home as they head down to Daytona Beach to take on Ohio and Ole Miss before returning to Pennsylvania to tangle with Penn State on Dec. 5 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge starting at 7:00 pm.

- The freshman was one point shy of notching her third straight double-double. Her two double-doubles are the most in a season by a Pitt freshman since Brenna Wise had five double-doubles in 2016-17.
- Brown went 4-for-6 from the floor while also dishing out two assists, a career-high two blocks and a steal across 35 minutes.
- Hayford had another strong game for the Panthers on Tuesday as she netted eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds across 32 minutes of work.

- Harris had a solid all-around game for the Panthers in the win as she played 29 minutes and added nine points, a career-high six assists, four rebounds and a steal.
- On the season, Harris is averaging 7.5 points, 3.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds while starting all four games for Pitt.
