PITTSBURGH – Behind a strong second half effort, the Pitt women's basketball team (8-2, 0-0 ACC) won their third straight game Tuesday night inside the Petersen Events Center as they down the Coppin State Eagles, 67-51. With the win, Pitt is off to their best start to a season since 2009-10 when they started 9-1.
"This was obviously not our best performance of the year," said head coach Lance White. But again, I am really pleased that we got the win tonight. As we continue to build this program, to grind it out and figure out a way to win, this is a huge step in our progression."
Junior Amber Brown took over down the stretch for the Panthers for the second straight game as she finished off her huge night with a career-high 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals across 29 minutes of work. She finished the game 7-of-11 from the floor while also getting to the free throw line a career-high 12 times in the win.

After Mary Dunn gave Pitt the 9-3 lead with a wide open triple, the Eagles netted back-to-back threes to end the scoring in the first with the teams heading to the second tied, 9-9.
After the Eagles took their first lead of the game, 14-13, early in the second quarter, the Pitt offense got going as Everett knocked down a triple and Dunn connected on her second deep ball of the game to force a timeout with the Panthers leading 19-14. The Eagles responded with a 10-2 run to take the 24-21 lead but Brown finished the quarter with three straight points to give the Panthers the 26-24 lead at halftime.
The Eagles opened the third quarter with three straight buckets to take the 30-26 lead but after a Pitt timeout, the Panthers were able to settle down as Everett knocked down a jumper and Dayshanette Harris finished off an and one layup to help Pitt regain the lead, 31-30. Coppin State took the lead right back just over two minutes later as they netted six straight but once again, Pitt responded as Everett knocked down a pair of triples and Brown finished the quarter with seven straight points to send the Panthers to the fourth leading 49-43.
The Pitt defense locked in over the final 10 minutes of action as they didn't allow a Coppin State bucket over the final five minutes of action. For the quarter Pitt held the Eagles to just two field goals and eight points. After the Eagles made a driving layup to cut the Pitt lead to six, 57-51, Pitt was able to close out the game on a 10-0 run as five different players contributed buckets including King, Brown, Everett, Harris and Hayford.
