Pitt Falters At Home Thursday Night Against Boston College

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (9-7, 0-5 ACC) dropped their third straight on Thursday night as the Boston College Eagles held onto the 75-64 victory inside the Petersen Events Center.
Pitt was led offensively by Dayshanette Harris who netted 15 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal in 31 minutes of work. Harris finished the game going 6-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Jayla Everett came off the bench and finished with 11 points while Amber Brown netted 10 points, four rebounds and a team-high three assists in 25 minutes. She finished her night going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
The Panthers got on the board early in the first as Rita Igbokwe made a pair of layups after some strong moves down low. Everett netted the next two jumpers for the Panthers and Brown sank two free throws to give Pitt the early 10-6 lead. The Eagles responded with a 14-2 run to take the 20-12 lead but Harris closed the quarter with a pair of jumpers as Pitt went into the second trailing 21-16.
The Eagles opened up the second quarter with seven straight before Everett stopped the run with a free throw to make it 28-17 in favor of the visitors. Trailing by 14 late in the quarter, Harris made a pair of free throws and Everett finished off a layup to make it a 10-point lead for Boston College. The Eagles ended the half with a triple to take the 38-25 lead into the locker room.
Pitt came out of the locker room with five straight points to cut their deficit to eight, 38-30, as Maliyah Johnson finished off a layup and Harris knocked down her lone triple of the game. The visitors responded quickly with a 10-2 run to push their lead back to 16, 48-32, midway through the third quarter. Cynthia Ezeja finished off one of her six offensive boards with a layup late in the quarter and Destiny Strother knocked down her first triple of the game to send the game to the fourth with Pitt trailing 57-42.
The Eagles netted the first six points of the final frame to push their lead out to a game-high 21, 63-42, before Everett was able to end the run with a jumper from just outside the paint. Pitt didn't go away over the final eight minutes of the fourth as they finished the quarter outscoring the Eagles 22-18 but it wasn't enough as they fell 75-64.
Off the bench, Strother had another solid game for the Panthers as she finished with eight points, a career-high four steals and two rebounds in 26 minutes of work. She went 2-for-7 from behind the arc as she has now connected on multiple triples in two straight. Igbokwe had a strong game in the loss as she netted seven points, seven rebounds and a season-high five blocks in 24 minutes. Ezeja made an impact with a season-high 10 rebounds (six offensive), three points and a block in 16 minutes of work.
As a team, the Panthers won the rebounding battle 41-36 while also grabbing 18 offensive rebounds which turned into 15 second chance points. The Eagles held the 32-24 edge in scoring in the paint while also outshooting Pitt 44.4% to 40.4% in the game.
The Eagles had four players score in double figures as Maria Gakdeng, Cameron Swartz and Makayla Dickens each netted 14 points in the win. Taylor Soule had 12 points, six assists and two steals while Marnelle Garraud had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists.
