PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers are set to compete at Penn Relays, the oldest and largest meet in the United States. In operation since 1895, the earliest record of Pitt competing at the meet dates back to 1918, when the Panthers' men's 4x400 relay team and men's sprint medley group each won "The Wheel", the coveted prize awarded to winning relay teams. Those historic wheels are currently on display in Director of Track & Field, Alonzo Webb's office. In total the Panthers have 19 relay championships at Penn Relays.
The meet kicks off on Thursday and runs through Saturday. On Thursday evening, Devin Nugent will return to Franklin Field to defend his 400-meter hurdles title. A year ago, the Abington, Pennsylvania native won the event in 50.84.
