PITTSBURGH - Pitt (27-26, 10-20) wrapped up its regular season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the No. 15 ranked Clemson Tigers at Charles L. Cost Field, 13-6.
Fighting back from an early deficit, the Panthers once again were able to build offensive success via the long-ball, with back-to-back home runs in the 6th inning. It marked the 14th time this season where Pitt hitters combined for two or more homers. =
Caden Dulin and Sebastian Pisacreta led the way offensively, each recording three hits on the afternoon. Dulin drove in Pitt's first run of the day on an RBI single to center. Pisacreta hit his ninth double of the season and drove in a run on a single to center in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jake Kendro had the third multiple-hit game of the season and hit his second long-ball of the year.
In what was his final game at Charles L. Cost Field, senior Jayden Melendez hit a 414 foot two-run home run over the batter's eye in center. Ryan Zuckerman, Julian Irizarry and David Pedanou all recorded hits as well.
Clemson plated eight runs on nine hits in the first three innings, and while the Panthers were able to put runners on base in the first and third, they were not able to push any of those runners across to score.
David Pedanou ripped a double into the left-center gap in the bottom of the third, and Luke Cantwell walked putting runners at first and second with two outs. Caden Dulin put a charge into a flyball that traveled deep into left field, but a strong breeze that wreaked havoc on hits all afternoon kept the ball in the ballpark and ended the Panther threat.
In relief, Antonio Doganiero pitched out of a tricky jam in the top of the fourth inning, inducing a fielder's choice sandwiched between two strikeouts of Tiger hitters to strand two runners.
Clemson added two runs in the top of the fifth, expanding their lead.
In the home half, the Panthers were able to get runners on with two outs as Pedanou and Cantwell drew back-to-back walks to set the table. This time, the wind didn't bother Dulin as he ripped a single up the middle that drove in Pedanou for Pitt's first run of the game. Dulin has hit safely in nine of his last 12 games, driving in 8 runs in the same span.
In the sixth inning, Sebastian Pisacreta shined in both phases of the game. In the top half, with runners at second and third, Pisacreta made a crucial play on a twisting foul pop-up near the Panther dugout to end the inning. In the home half, he lifted a one-out double into right field to get into scoring position. The two-out offense struck again as Jayden Melendez launched his sixth homer of the season deep over the batter's eye in center field. Pitt added a third run four pitches later Jake Kendro went back-to-back on an opposite field solo home run, his second of the year.
The Tigers got a run back in the top of the seventh inning, but TJ Socarras was able to limit the Clemson offense to that lone run in his two innings of work out of the bullpen. He finished the game setting a new career high for strikeouts, punching out four of the nine batters he faced.
Julian Irizarry lined a pinch-hit single through the right side in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jayden Melendez drew a walk followed by a Jake Kendro single and loaded the bases. David Pedanou recorded his 20th RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the deficit to 11-5.
The Panthers entered the home half of the ninth trailing 13-5. Ryan Zuckerman got his first hit of the afternoon on a line drive double into right. Sebastian Pisacreta notched his third hit and drove in his first run on a single to center as Zuckerman scored from second. Pitt fell in the regular season finale, 13-6.
