PITTSBURGH – The No.7 Pitt men's soccer team rallied from a first-half deficit to earn a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Duquesne Tuesday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers scored twice in a five-minute span in the second half to secure the win and improve to 8-2-2 on the season.
Duquesne opened the scoring in the eighth minute, as Ashwin Menon found the back of the net to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead. The Panthers generated five shots in the opening half but were unable to find the equalizer before the break.
Pitt responded in the second half, with Anders Bordoy netting the equalizer in the 56th minute with a hard shot to the upper right corner. Kareem Ahmed and Pablo Portero assisted on the goal, Bordoy's second of the season, to even the score at 1-1.
The Panthers took the lead just over five minutes later when Albert Thorsen scored in the 61st minute. Cannon Scretchen found the head of Thorsen in the box to give Pitt the game-winning tally. Pitt's defense held Duquesne to just one shot in the second half to preserve the victory.
Pitt controlled possession throughout the contest, finishing with a 12-5 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Kareem Ahmed and Bordoy led the attack with four shots apiece.
