STANFORD, Calif. – The Pitt men's basketball team held a six-point lead with seven minutes to play, but Stanford used a 14-1 run to pull away for a 75-67 victory Wednesday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Panthers (10-18, 3-12 ACC) rallied from a five-point second-half deficit to take a 63-57 lead on a three-point play by Cameron Corhenwith 7:08 remaining, capping an 11-0 run. Stanford (17-11, 6-9) answered with the decisive late surge to close it out, with Ebuka Okorie scoring 11 points during that stretch to put the game out of reach.
Pitt got off to a strong start, racing ahead on an early 7-0 run and building the lead as large as seven. Corhen was the primary driver, scoring seven of Pitt's first nine points during an efficient opening stretch. Nojus Indrusaitis hit a timely three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to push the lead to 18-11, and the Panthers maintained control for much of the opening half despite nine turnovers. After Stanford shot just 2-of-12 to open the game, the Cardinal found their footing and closed the final minutes of the first half on a 7-0 run to pull ahead briefly before Barry Dunning Jr.'s three-pointer sent Pitt to the break ahead, 34-32.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair for much of its first 15 minutes. Stanford opened with a quick 6-1 run to retake the lead, but Pitt responded. Roman Siulepa — held to limited minutes in the first half after picking up two early fouls — scored on a running layup to put the Panthers ahead 41-40. Damarco Minor then made consecutive three-pointers and Dunning continued to connect from long range to keep the Panthers within striking distance as the teams traded the lead 15 times across the game.
With 7:08 remaining, Pitt appeared to seize command. Indrusaitis converted a three-pointer off a steal in transition, capping the 11-0 run and giving the Panthers their largest lead of the second half at 60-57. Corhen then completed a three-point play on the next possession, pushing it to 63-57.
But Stanford's Okorie answered every Pitt surge. The Cardinal guard tied the game at 63 with 4:46 to play with a three-point play in transition, then scored on a driving layup to put Stanford ahead for good at 65-64 with 4:07 remaining. A three-pointer from a baseline out of bounds and another triple gave Stanford a 71-64 advantage and a lead it would not relinquish.
Dunning cut the deficit to four with a three-pointer at the 1:43 mark, but Stanford scored on a second-chance basket inside to extend the margin back to six with 33 seconds left and made its free throws down the stretch to close out the win.
Corhen finished with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals — his 20th double-figure scoring game of the season. Dunning's 19 points included a 4-of-7 performance from three-point range on 7-of-11 shooting overall. Indrusaitis added 10 off the bench. Omari Witherspoon recorded four points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Okorie scored a game-high 34 points on 11-of-19 shooting to lead Stanford, making all nine of his free throw attempts.
The paint proved to be a decisive battleground. Pitt was outscored 42-24 in the lane, and Stanford converted 13 fast break points compared to just three for the Panthers.
Pitt will continue its west coast swing Saturday when the Panthers visit Cal. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.
