RICHMOND, Ky. – Bekah Duck threw her first career no-hitter as Pitt opened the Colonel Classic with a dominant 10-0 win over the SIUE Cougars on Friday evening.
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Tieley Vaughn led off with a single before Calle Henne followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. KK Esparza drove in the first run with a single, and Henne later came home on a groundout to give Pitt an early 2-0 lead.
Duck answered immediately in the bottom of the inning, retiring the side to set the tone in the circle. Pitt added to its lead in the third when Henne launched a solo home run to left field, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
Locked in from the start, Duck held SIUE hitless through the first three innings and allowed just two walks through the first 11 batters she faced.
The Panthers broke the game open with a seven-run sixth inning. Mackenzie Reese led off with a double, followed by a single from Shelby Frazier. Addison Oberbreckling drove in a run with a double to center field, and a walk, single, and another walk brought home an additional run to set the stage for Esparza's grand slam, extending Pitt's lead to 10-0.
Duck finished the game tossing 6.0 hitless innings, allowing four walks and striking out four to secure the run-rule victory and her first career no-hitter.
