Sixth-Inning Surge Sends Boston College Past Pitt, 6-3

PITTSBURGH – A five-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Pitt softball team fell to Boston College, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Vartabedian Field.

The Panthers (16-12, 3-5 ACC) were locked in a tight contest through five innings before the Eagles (10-19, 2-3 ACC) broke through with a decisive rally in the sixth.

After Boston College took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the fourth, Pitt answered in the bottom half of the inning. Calle Henne singled to spark the offense, and Payton Harris, running in her place, came around to score on a throwing error to even the game at 1-1.

Gwen Sparks was strong in the circle to start, striking out seven over five innings while allowing just one run on four hits.

The game turned in the sixth. Boston College loaded the bases before Adriana Martinez launched a grand slam to right field, giving the Eagles a 5-1 advantage. Two batters later, Nicole Riddell added a solo home run to extend the lead to 6-1.

Pitt responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Henne drew a walk and moved into scoring position before Mackenzie Reese reached on a fielder's choice and an error that brought home a run. Later in the frame, Reese stole home on a successful double steal to cut the deficit to 6-3.

The Panthers were unable to generate further offense, finishing with four hits on the day. Henne, KK Esparza, Camryn Murphy and Ahmari Braden each recorded a hit.

Boston College's Bailey Kendziorski earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out four.
