STANFORD, Calif. – Pitt fell to Stanford, 9-2, in the third game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon.

Stanford used a pair of early scoring innings to build a lead and pulled away late, collecting 11 hits in the victory while holding Pitt to two hits.

The Cardinal struck first in the opening inning when Emily Jones launched a solo home run to give Stanford a 1-0 advantage. Stanford extended the lead in the second, plating three runs on four hits to move in front 4-0.

Pitt responded in the third inning to cut into the deficit. Tieley Vaughn and Addison Toczek each recorded a hit before Calle Henne drove in two runs to get the Panthers on the board, trimming the deficit to 4-2.

Stanford added an insurance run in the fifth inning before breaking the game open in the sixth with four more runs, highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Taryn Kern and Emily Jones.

Zoe Prystajko (7-2) earned the win in relief for Stanford, striking out eight over three scoreless innings. Kyra Pittman (4-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in two innings of work. Mia Kliethermes tossed 3.1 innings in relief with three strikeouts, while Allie Lukaszewicz finished the final two outs.

Pitt will play its home opener Wednesday, March 11 against Robert Morris at 6 p.m.
