Pitt Drops Series Finale to Clemson

PITTSBURGH – Pitt dropped the series to Clemson with an 11-7 defeat Sunday at Vartabedian Field. The Panthers erased a six-run deficit and cut the game to two runs, but could not overcome the Tigers' offense late.
Clemson jumped ahead early in the first inning. Bekah Duck retired the first two batters on seven pitches before issuing back-to-back walks. The Tigers capitalized with a two-run double followed by a two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead. Gwen Sparks entered in relief and recorded the final out on three pitches with a groundout to third.
The Tigers extended their advantage in the second on a two-run homer from Taylor Pipkins, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Pitt responded in the bottom half, scoring three runs to begin its comeback. Tieley Vaughn reached on a dropped third strike and throwing error that allowed Shelby Frazier to score, and a second throwing error brought Helton home. Vaughn later scored on a pair of wild pitches to cut the deficit to 6-3.
The Panthers added another run in the third when Camryn Murphy drew a bases-loaded walk, trimming the margin to 6-4.
Clemson regained control in the sixth, plating five runs. Sarah Breaux delivered a three-run homer to make it 9-4, and Jamison Brockenbrough followed with a two-run blast to extend the lead to 11-4.
Pitt answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth after opening the inning with four straight hits. Ahmari Braden led off with a first-pitch home run, while Vaughn added an RBI single down the right-field line. Calle Henne followed with another RBI single to close the gap to 11-7, but the Panthers could not get closer.
Macey Cintron earned the win, and Duck was charged with the loss.
Pitt returns to the road next week, beginning with a midweek contest at Ohio State on Wednesday before a weekend series at Louisville.
