CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Outfielder Lorenzo Carrier had three hits in Pitt's (28-21, 10-17 ACC) series finale loss at No. 2 North Carolina (40-9-1, 20-7 ACC) on Sunday. The Panthers fell 7-3 at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium.
Carrier had his second multiple-hit game of the weekend in the series finale, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. It was his eighth three-hit game of the season.
Sebastian Pisacreta hit his 14th home run of the year, adding to his single-season career high total. Jackson Cooke got the start as Pitt's designated hitter on Sunday and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Shortstop Caden Dulin added to his team-leading hit total with a single this afternoon.
Right-handed pitcher Drew Lafferty made his team-leading 13th start of the season and gave the Panthers a quality outing. Through his first five inning, Lafferty struck out five batters and allowed just two runs. He finished the day with six hits and four runs charged to his ledger.
The Tar Heels scored first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Pitt responded in the next half inning as Jackson Cooke drove in the Panthers' first run on Sunday with a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the second. Trey Fenderson led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Fenderson trotted home on Cooke's fly ball to center to cut the Tar Heel lead in half.
Drew Lafferty tossed scoreless frames in the second and third innings to keep it one-run game after three.
Sebastian Pisacreta knotted the game at two with solo shot to center field in the top of the fourth inning.
Lafferty continued to deal for the Panthers on Sunday, firing scoreless fourth and fifth innings in a 2-2 ballgame through five.
North Carolina plated two runs in the sixth inning to regain their lead, making it a 4-2 game. Kai Wagner saved at least one run for the Panthers with a diving play down the third base line to end the inning and keep it a two-run deficit.
The Tar Heels added another pair of runs in the next inning as they led 6-2 heading to the eighth.
Despite threatening in the top of the eighth inning with a single and a pair of walks, the Panthers left the bases loaded.
Pitt fought until the final out in the series finale. With his third hit of the game, Lorenzo Carrier drove in a run on an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning as the Panthers fell on Sunday afternoon, 7-3.
