BERKELEY, Calif. — The Pitt men's soccer team held off a second-half push from California on Sunday, holding on for a 2-1 win at Edwards Stadium that gave head coach Jay Vidovich the 100th win of his tenure at Pitt.

Pitt improves to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in ACC play, while Cal drops to 2-3-3 (0-2-1 ACC). The win was also the first in program history for Pitt over Cal, snapping an 0-2 mark in the all-time series.

Pitt broke through in the 22nd minute when Cannon Scretchen drove a hard cross into the box that deflected off a Cal defender and into the net, giving the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.

The Panthers doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half. Miguel Bertran played a ball through to Albert Thorsen, who found himself alone in the middle, and Thorsen slotted his shot into the left corner to make it 2-0 in the 48th minute for his first tally of the season.

Cal answered in the 61st minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Golden Bears pressed for an equalizer over the final half hour but could not find another opening.

Jack Moxom made three saves in goal to preserve the win and improve to 5-2-1 on the season. Cal held the edge in shots (9-5) and shots on target (4-1) and out-cornered Pitt, 6-0.

Sunday's win was the 100th of Vidovich's tenure at Pitt, moving his record with the program to 100-77-23. Vidovich is in his 11th season as Pitt's head coach.
