Women's Basketball Earns 35-Point Win Over Elon

PITTSBURGH—Pitt’s women’s basketball team records its largest win of the season with an 84-49 victory over Elon in the second game of the Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament, this afternoon, at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers improved to 3-1 on the year and will play Youngstown State in the championship game on Saturday.
Five players scored in double figures for the Pitt, including a game-high 22 from senior Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones). Zellous recorded her fourth consecutive game with more than 20 points.
Additionally, senior Xenia Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and freshman Shawnice Wilson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Westinghouse) each scored 14, while sophomore Taneisha Harrison (Bowie, Md./St. John’s College High School) chipped in 13 and freshman Kate Popovec (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) recorded a career-high 11 in the game.
The Panthers jumped out to an early double-digit lead, 24-13, thanks to a layup from Stewart. Later Harrison gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game at 42-22, with a pair of made free throws in the first half.
Pitt held a 16-point lead at the half, 44-28, as the Panthers shot 51.6 percent from the field.
Following intermission, the Panthers increased their lead to 58-32 with a 14-4 run that was sparked by four points from Wilson. Pitt continued to dominate, forcing 10 second-half turnovers by Elon.
Pitt held the Phoenix without a field goal the last three minutes and 30 seconds of play.
In the first game of today’s Pitt Thanksgiving Tournament, Youngstown State defeated Weber State 67-60. Nikita LaFleur scored a game-high 24 points off the bench for the Penguins.
Youngstown State (1-3) earned its first win of the season in that contest and faces Pitt in the Thanksgiving Tournament Championship game at 4 p.m., on Saturday at the Petersen Events Center. The consolation game will begin at 2 p.m. and include Weber State (2-2) and Elon (1-4).
