PITTSBURGH - Sophomore Brenna Wise recorded the ninth double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds as Pitt women's basketball (4-0) reached its best start since 2009-10, defeating Loyola Maryland (2-3), 74-44, at Petersen Events Center Monday night.
Pitt's 4-0 start is its best since opening the 2009-10 season with eight consecutive wins.
All five starters posted double figures in the scoring column, led by sophomore Kauai Bradley who tied her career high with 16 points. She added a career-high six assists. Graduate transfer Brandi Harvey-Carr had her second consecutive game of 10 points or more, scoring 12. Junior Aysia Bugg had 11 points and six assists while freshman Jasmine Whitney had 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.
The Panthers shot 46.2 percent from the field while holding the Greyhounds to 29.3 percent. Pitt's stingy defense forced 19 Loyola Maryland turnovers, and converted them into 21 points. The Greyhounds had just two points off of five Pitt turnovers.
Pitt never trailed, opening the first quarter on a 10-0 run lasting until 7:16 when Alexis Gray hit a 3-pointer. Loyola Maryland hit two more triples to cut the Panthers' lead to six at 4:53 (15-9), but a 6-0 Pitt run pulled the lead back to double figures at 21-9 (3:18). Whitney beat the first quarter buzzer with a layup to make it 29-19 at the first break.
The second quarter saw an incredible offensive outburst from the Panthers, as they went on an 18-0 run lasting the first 8:53 of the period. They held the Greyhounds to zero points until the 1:07 mark, holding a 44-21 advantage. In total, the Panthers outscored Loyola Maryland 21-2, marking their fewest points allowed in a quarter all season. At halftime, it was 47-21 in Pitt's favor.
The Panthers reached a 30-point lead at the 7:46 mark in the third quarter, but were held without a field goal for the rest of the period. The Greyhounds outscored Pitt 13-7 in the third to make the score 54-34 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Bradley hit a free throw at the 9:11 mark in the fourth period to end the scoring drought that lasted since the 7:46 mark in the third quarter. The Panthers then went on a 15-3 run to seal the deal, reaching a 32-point lead at 4:49, up 69-37. Madison Serio scored her first point as a Panther when she hit a free throw at the 3:16 mark to make it 70-39 in Pitt's favor. The Panthers remained in the 30-point margin as they went on to win their fourth consecutive game, 74-44.
