Cavaliers Capture 7-0 Win
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team fell to No. 15 Virginia by a score of 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The Cavaliers took a 4-0 lead into the break and added three more in the second half as Pitt surrendered its most goals since Sept. 30, 2012 in an 8-0 loss vs. No. 11 Georgetown.
"We started off okay and then gave up that first goal," said head coach Greg Miller. "I'm not really sure what happened on that second goal, to be honest but it just snowballed from there. We addressed some things at halftime and we were a little bit better and more competitive, but it was just too little too late."
Virginia struck first in the 13th minute when Veronica Latsko finished off a cross and put the ball in the left side of the net. In the 17th minute Virginia would extend its lead, converting on a restart in front of the cage. Just seconds later the Cavaliers would go up 3-0, rolling a ball over the line.
The Cavaliers would take a 4-0 lead into the break after a goal in the 26th minute following a takeaway in front of the net by Taryn Tores.
In the 57th minute, Virginia would go up 5-0, making it 6-0 in the 63rd minute as Latsko completed the hat trick. The final goal would come in the 79th frame, as Oliva Hazelrigg put a penalty kick in the goal to send Virginia to a 7-0 victory.
Keeper Katelyn McEachern got the start and played in the first half of action, allowing four goals and stopping three shots. Fellow redshirt freshman Amaia Pena played in the second half, allowing three goals and saving two balls. With the loss, Pitt falls to 3-6-3 (0-3-1 ACC).
