Whitney Notches Career-High in Loss at Chapel Hill
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a game that came down to the final seconds, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team was edged by North Carolina, 68-67 at Carmichael Arena Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Jasmine Whitney led the Panther offense with a career performance, tallying 21 points, going 10-of-16 from the floor, adding five assists, two steals and a block. She was one of three Panthers in double-digits, as Kalista Walters produced her fourth double-double of the season, recording 16 points and 10 rebounds. Yacine Diop would also finish the contest in double figures, tallying 15 points and adding five rebounds.
It was a tightly contested first half as the opening 20 minutes saw seven lead changes. Diop and Whitney would combine for the first eight points of the game for the Panthers, with Walters adding six of the final eight Pitt points. The Panthers concluded the opening quarter with some impressive defensive work as a steal and layup from Whitney and a takeaway by Kyla Nelson led to a pair of made free throws by Walters, putting the Panthers up two.
The Panthers dominated coming out of the break, tallying 21 in the third and outscoring the Tar Heels by nine to take a six point lead. In the third, Whitney led all scorers with seven, as the Panthers shot 57.1 percent from the field in the quarter.
The Tar Heels turned the tide in the fourth, hitting a three-point shot in the final 12 seconds of play to grab a one-point lead. The advantage would be North Carolina's first since the 7:47 mark of the third period. Pitt would get a few more chances, unable to sink a pair of free throws with two seconds to play, as the Tar Heels held on for the victory.
