Cold Shooting Fourth Quarter Proves Costly In Loss To Georgetown

PITTSBURGH – Despite holding the lead through the third quarter of action on Saturday afternoon, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team (1-2, 0-0 ACC) fell at home to Georgetown at the Petersen Events Center, 66-56. The loss marked the seventh straight in the all-time series to the Hoyas who improved to 1-2 overall on the season.
"I thought at times we played like we needed to today, you rebound the ball and then you have a chance to go make plays on offense," said second-year head coach Lance White. "But when we got the lead, we don't understand that next piece of how you keep a lead and how hard you have to play through that consistently. That part we will get, we are still trying to find our identity, who we are and what we are about and rebounding has to be a big part of that. Whenever you don't rebound the ball, you lose. That for me is our biggest takeaway. I'm disappointed, but at the same time I want growth from this team and I see growth."
Pitt was led offensively by captain Aysia Bugg who netted a team-high 17 points, two rebounds and a steal across 35 minutes of work. Appearing in the 100th game of her Pitt career, Bugg connected on four triples for the Panthers and now has an ACC-high 13 three-pointers made on the season. Off the bench Emy Hayford had a big game for Pitt as she netted 13 points and four rebounds while fellow freshman Amber Brown finished off her second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Panthers were able to get out to a great start on Saturday as they connected on three straight three-pointers, two from Bugg and one from Dayshanette Harris, to open up the 9-4 lead just over two minutes into action. After the Hoyas took over an 11-9 lead midway through the quarter, Rita Igbokwe and Brown each netted layups down the stretch of the quarter to send the Panthers to the second quarter leading 20-16.
Pitt used a 10-0 run midway through the second quarter to gain their biggest lead of the game, 34-23, as Bugg finished off a layup and free throw and Emy Hayford knocked down a corner three-pointer to force Georgetown into a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Hoyas responded with a 12-0 run of their own to regain the lead and take the 38-36 advantage into the locker room.
Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the third quarter as the Panthers outscored the Hoyas 11-8 to take the 47-46 lead into the final quarter. Hayford closed out the scoring in the quarter for the Panthers with a fast break layup as Pitt held a five-point lead in the quarter.
After Brown gave Pitt the 51-46 lead early on in the fourth quarter, the Hoyas controlled the tempo of the quarter and outscored the Panthers 20-5 across the final eight minutes of play to earn the road win on Saturday.
Igbokwe was a monster on the glass for the Panthers all afternoon off the bench as she closed out her impressive game with six points and a career-high 11 rebounds, four offensive, across 22 minutes of work. Harris closed out her game with seven points and a team-high three assists across 27 minutes of action.
Georgetown was led offensively by Taylor Barnes who netted 18 points and four assists while Anita Kelava finished off her strong performance with six points, a game-high 14 rebounds and five blocks.
